Access
When parents visit the school to see a child for any reason, it is important contact is made first with the front office. This is to prevent unauthorised access.
Before & After School Care and Holiday Programme
Cool Kids Before & After School Care and Holiday Programme has been established to provide quality care for children from Warkworth Primary School. It operates from the Senior Area Hall between the hours of 7:15am - 8:30am and 3:00pm - 6:00pm, Monday to Friday.
The completion of an enrolment form is necessary before a child can enter the programme. It is Cool Kids' intention to provide a professional service, which will give your child a safe, secure environment and enjoyable care experience. Cool Kids Warkworth will provide varied and organised age appropriate activities each day.
Before School Care includes full supervision (children may bring their own breakfast). After School Care includes afternoon tea, free time, structured outdoor and/or indoor activities as well as 20-30 minutes of supervised homework and/or reading time each day for all children. While the staff will be available during homework time, it will remain the parents/guardians responsibility to ensure all homework is completed and returned on time.

Assemblies
Full school assemblies are held even weeks on a Friday from 2:10 - 2:50pm. The assemblies are run by House Captains and a different syndicate presents each time. 2019 Assembly Timetable
Attendance
We operate a ‘call back’ system for absences at Warkworth School. If your child will be absent from school, please contact the school office (by telephone, text or email) before 9:00am on that day and advise us. If there is no answer please leave a message on the 24 hour absentee message service giving the child's name, teacher and reason for absence.
In other cases of absence, e.g. holidays during term time, please discuss the issue beforehand with your child's teacher and send a letter / email to the school office with the dates your child with be absent. If your child arrives at school after 9:00am they will need to report to the school office before going to their community and likewise if they leave the school before 3:00pm.
If your child doesn’t want to go to school, it might be because they’re not getting on with their peers, feeling too much pressure, or there may be a health issue. Talk to them to find out why, then meet with the teacher or principal to look at how you can work together to support your child.
There are occasions when children need to take time off school for health reasons. Talk to your child's teacher about the expected time that your child may be off school. Usually arrangements can be made for school work to be taken home and replenished as needed. Children who miss a lot of school because they have a serious illness may be able to get help from a regional health school. Regional health schools have programmes for children with illnesses that mean they can’t go to school regularly.
Banking
Children are able to bank money at school through the ASB. A deposit box is held at the Junior campus office.
Behaviour
Teachers at this school work positively with children, trying to encourage high standards of work, genuine effort and responsible behaviour. When a misdemeanour occurs, some appropriate consequence will be given. Where necessary, this will include consultation with parents.
Bicycles / Scooters
Children may ride their bicycles to school, provided they wear helmets. Bicycle racks are available on the senior side and scooter racks are available on both areas.
Bookclub
From time to time the school sells paperbacks through Scholastic Book Club. If you choose to buy any books, please send the money (cheques made payable to Scholastic NZ Ltd) and order form to the school office in a sealed envelope. This is very important as several people handle the orders.
Bullying
It is rarely brought to our attention that there is a problem with bullying at our school. We operate a zero tolerance policy with regard to bullying.
We run several programmes to develop children’s awareness of acceptable behaviours and to develop assertiveness and acceptance in our students
Buses
If you have any queries about the running of the buses, please contact the Senior Area Office, 425 8300 extn 0. Our children line up in the bus lines at 3:00pm and await instructions. The young ones are well looked after; there is usually more than one teacher to supervise them.

Occasionally parents want children to travel on a bus on which they are not regular passengers. If this is the case, please contact Gubbs Buses on 425 8348 to make sure the buses are not overloaded.

Civil Defence Emergency
In the event of a Civil Defence or similar emergency situation, the following with be the procedure:
- Students will gather with staff at designated assembly points in an evacuation.
- A roll is taken immediately after an event such as a fire or earthquake. Key staff sweep the site for any unaccounted children and adults.
- A decision will be made on whether to close the school and parents and caregivers will be informed.
- If possible a text will be sent out using the school texting system.
- If possible the website will be updated with information.
- If possible an email will be sent out to all parents and caregivers.
- We will use Network ZB radio station for announcements (89.3FM and 1035AM).
- A collection point will be set up on our site where parents / caregivers will wait. No one who was offsite at the time of the emergency will be allowed onsite to look for students in their care. This is for everyone’s safety, both in terms of negotiating potential hazards and managing people in a disaster situation.
- Students will only be released to parents and caregivers named on the students Civil Defence form.

You are asked to pick your children up from the pick up line in the Senior Hall.
Communication
Warkworth School operates an open door policy. If you wish to talk to your child’s teacher, please feel free to call into class and arrange a suitable time. It is important to us and your child that you are engaged with their learning and feel comfortable talking with our teachers. Parents are welcome to contact the school if they have any queries. If it is to do with your children, please see the class teacher first.
If you have any concerns about your children or their schooling, please talk to the teacher first. If that doesn’t solve the problem, make an appointment to see the Senior Teacher in that area of the school. We really want your children to be happy and successful and will work with you to achieve that.
If you would like to arrange an appointment with the Principal or Assistant Principals, please contact the office to arrange a time.

Health Issues
Please let your child’s teacher know if your child has any health issues that may interfere with their class participation ie allergies, illness, injury. We want to ensure that each child has the best classroom experience possible and/or support children who may need to take time off school - In some instances we may be able to support you and your child with providing school work at home.
Sometimes children need to have special medicines at school for such things as asthma and severe allergies etc. Any of these should be labeled showing the child’s name and the required dosage clearly on the outside of the container. We have a safety cabinet in each sick bay for the storage of such medicines. Parents are asked to complete a health action plan if the condition is life threatening.
All schools have issues with head lice from time to time. Please click here to see the Ministry of Education published information on head lice, nits and methods to combat them.
Learning Community Size
It is difficult to give an accurate answer to this question. If we have unexpected enrolments this will impact on class size. The community sizes in 2019 are as follows:

Lost Property
There is a lost property area located in the Junior Hall. Please feel free to check these areas frequently if your child has misplaced an item. We encourage parents to label all items of clothing to ensure they can be returned to you. A handy hint is to write your child's full name on the underside bottom hem of their school jumper or have their name embroidered down an outside seam.
Lost or Damaged School Property
The school has a policy of requesting a payment for lost or damaged books. A charge will be made for damaged school property, such as windows, where the breakage could have been avoided by sensible behaviour.
Lunch
There is a ‘lunch eating’ time between 1:05 - 1:25pm. The children are supervised during this time and encouraged to sit and eat their lunches. Staff will also check children’s lunch boxes to make sure that food is eaten.
We encourage parents to avoid chips, sweets, or highly processed foods.
A drink bottle with fresh water is must.
Sandwiches, wraps, fresh fruit, salads, pasta, rice, natural popcorn, crackers and cheese or vege sticks are all simple to prepare healthy foods.
Warkworth School has a ‘pack in pack out’ policy for lunch time rubbish. This is worth bearing in mind when packing lunches…yoghurt for example can be very messy in a lunch box if the child does not finish it.
An insulated lunch box or a small ice pack (or frozen water bottle) popped into your child’s lunch box will help to keep their lunch cool during our hot summers.
School lunches are available Monday to Friday by ordering online through The Lunch Club.
Money
When you send money to school, would you please seal it in an envelope and on the outside write:
- Child’s name and teacher
- What the money is for
This is for your own security as well as for making the money easier to handle. If you need to send money for more than one child, if possible please place these in separate envelopes and send to the appropriate office.
Photos
School photos are generally taken in early August. Your child will bring home a form to be completed with a variety of options of photo packs, these are prepaid and returned to school. We offer the option of sibling photos, the envelope for these photos will be available at the admin offices. Sibling photos are only available to children attending Warkworth Primary School.
PTA
The Parents and Teachers Association generally meet in the Junior campus staffroom at 7:30pm on Wednesday's. Please check newsletters for actual dates of meetings. All parents are welcome at the meeting which, as well as providing a forum for discussion of developments in the school, also assists the school in fundraising activities and provides a social occasion for parents of the school to meet.

Religious Instruction
Religious Instruction is provided at 12:50pm on Thursdays in the Junior Hall to all students who wish to participate. Parental consent is given each year when parents return their confirmation of personal details, emergency contacts, etc. Please discuss this with your child so they are aware of your decision. Reporting to Parents
Three-Way Conference: At Warkworth School we use three-way conferencing as an alternative to the traditional parent / teacher interviews. At the three-way conference, your child will show you three selected pieces of work - something they are proud of, something they found difficult and something they would like help with. This will provide a rich source of information that gives you an idea of what your child sees as their strengths, and those areas they wish to develop in their learning. You will also gain some knowledge about what you can do at home to help with their learning.
During your three-way conference, your child and their teacher will have discussed their learning and identified a goal to work on between now and the next three-way conference to be held at the end of Term 3. This will become a key focus to progress your child’s learning and will be reported on in Term 3.
Achievement Folders: Throughout the year teachers collate your child’s work into achievement folders. These come home twice a year and are discussed during the tree way conferences. These folders are a live record of your child’s progress and future steps. Please read through these folders with your child and use them as a starting point to talk about their achievements and goals.
Road Patrol
A teacher oversees the SH1 crossing after school. In the morning parents are asked to take their children across the highway. Teachers supervise the patrolled crossing (on Hill Street) from 8:20 - 9:00am and 3:00 - 3:10pm.
School Bag
School bags get a lot of use, we recommend a sturdy waterproof bag which has several pockets to pop lunch, drink bottles, raincoats, notices and book bags in. Children may need to bring a change of clothes so capacity is something to consider carefully. Trolley bags (inflight style bags) are not encouraged, small children find them hard to walk with and often trip up school mates.
We ask that children have a dedicated book bag to keep their school library books in. This really helps to keep our precious school resources in circulation for longer.
School Hours
Normal school hours are: 9:00am - 3:00pm. Morning interval: 10:30am - 10:50am Lunch: 12:30pm - 1:30pm
Shoes
Track shoes, sandals, lace up or velcro style shoes are all suitable for wearing to school. Jandals are not considered suitable school wear and can be the cause of foot injuries. In winter some parents send their children with slippers to change into for inside wear which is also acceptable.
Sick Bay
If children become ill while at school, they will be cared for in the sick bay. If it is considered desirable that a child be taken home, then parents will be contacted. In extreme cases where parents cannot be contacted and when expert medical opinion is considered necessary, then the Principal makes the decision.
If you are happy for us to administer Pamol or Panadol should your child require it for mild ailments it is helpful if you complete a consent form which can be held in the sick bay.
Stationery Packs
Back to School stationery is purchased in class packs online at www.schoolpacks.eenymeeny.co.nz at the beginning of the year. During the year, stationery items are available at the school office.
Junior Area: Please name all exercise books with your child’s name and room number. Other sundry items such as pencils, glue sticks, sharpies do not need to be named as teachers generally hold these as communal items.
Senior Area: Please name all items as children have their own desks and will be responsible for looking after their stationery.
Sun Hats
We require all children to wear hats in sunny weather during Term 1 and 4. If a child forgets their hat, they must play under the shaded area during interval and lunch. School hats are available for purchase at the Senior Area office. For acceptable styles of hat please click here.
Swimming Lessons
Warkworth School has a school pool which is heated and lessons are usually held in Terms 1 & 4. Please note, however, that whilst the construction of the new Senior campus is underway, swimming lessons have had to be postponed. We hope to be able to resume swimming lessons in February 2020.
All children are encouraged to participate in these lessons. Your child will need to bring togs, towel and a water proof bag. Lesson focus is on water safety and basic skills in the junior classes.
